Grocery Deals

If you know me through FB you'll notice my status line today. I had a killer day at the grocery this morning. After emailing someone who asked me how I did it I figured I would share my super savings with my bloggy buds. I have to reiterate that this is not typical since there are times I need things that I just can't get good deals on. But when I can, I do. So I copied the email I sent her below.

******************************************************************************************

This doesn't happen very often for me. But I'm trying to work harder at it. The majority of it is pulling out the local grocery ads and matching them to the coupons I have but only using them if it's going to do me a lot of good.

So here are some strategies:

Birds Eye frozen veggies were 50% off in the store. I bought 3 at a cost of $.89/each and then I had a $1.00/3 coupon which makes each pkg about $.56.

Cheerios were B1G1 (buy one get one free). Each box was $4.29 so I got 2 for that price. I had 2 coupons because I had 2 items. One for $.75/1 and one for $.50/1 (and the $.50 one got doubled to $1.00) So for 2 boxes of Banana Nut Cheerios I paid $1.27/each.

Uncrustables were 3 for $6.00 ($2/each). I had 3 coupons for $.75/1 box. I paid $1.25 each.

Nabisco Ritz Crackers were B1G1. So for 2 it was $3.49 and then I had a $2.00/2 coupon which dropped both boxes to $1.49. I paid about $.75/each

Pillsbury frosting on sale for $1.50. $.40/1 coupon which got doubled to $.80. I paid $.70 for it.

Ken's Salad Dressing B1G1. Two for $3.19. $1.00/2 coupon which made two $2.19. Each was $1.08

French's Mustard $1.39. Coupon $.30 doubled to $.60 is $.79 for the mustard.

Yakisoba Teriyaki Noodles $.89. $.35 coupon doubled to $.70 is $.19 for the noodles.

Dog treats with Milkbone B1G1 coupon. $3.09 for 2 = $1.54 each

Suave Body Wash $2.19 with $.50 coupon doubled to $1.00 = $1.19

Pop Secret Popcorn 2 for $4.00. Coupon for $1.00/2 is $1.50 each

Ruffles Potato Chips B1G1. $3.99/2 is right about $2.00 a bag - no coupon.

Red Baron Pizza 2/$8.00 on sale. I had a $1.00/2 coupon = $7.00 for 2. Each was $3.50. Not a great savings but it's not very often I can get it for cheaper than that.

I also bought a few things I didn't have coupons for. But my total cost after coupons was $43.40

Coupon/sale savings $45.38

My total would've been $88.78
Percent savings: 51%

Like I said, I sit down with the grocery ads and sort through my coupons to figure out what's going to get me the most bang for my buck. If it's not good savings, I save the coupon in hopes of a better deal later. There are also a few gals around here that do grocery blogs that help compile lists of grocery deals for all the local stores. So they help me with a little bit of the work.

That's awesome! I do use coupons but never usually get more than $10 or so off my bill at a time. Good job!

This is the thing that bugs me about coupons though: they're rarely for anything nutritious as this list proves (besides the veggies). Uncrustables are so loaded with chemicals and preservatives that they shouldn't be allowed to even give them away. I know that's a terribly negative opinion, but I'd rather spend more money for healthy food than to use coupons to get food that has no nutrition in it. Bugs me that stores can't put fresh, unprocessed foods on sale more often.
