There are only 2 things besides furniture we really need now:
1. A diaper bag
2. A sling
I'd really like a backpack diaper bag rather than the regular kind for several reasons. I hated the diaper bag I had for Eriks. I felt like it was going to break my arm off. Plus I wasn't really keen on how it was organized. I also like the idea of a backpack so that Lane feels comfortable carrying it if need be. A friend and fellow China mom got a bag from here called the Society Satchel from the Cake collection which totally rocks but it's not me and I so could never see Lane willing to carry it. So, I'm looking for suggestions from those of you who carried backpacks as diaper bags. Do I just use a regular backpack or do I specifically buy a diaper bag backpack??
Secondly, the sling. I have a baby B.j.o.r.n that I got with Eriks. I love it, but I'm afraid Emi will be too big to carry her in it. Plus, I'd like a sling that allows for close body contact and again something Lane would be willing to use. I'm really wanting to get a M.a.y.a wrap as I've had several friends who have used them and swear by them. Any opinions?
Let the suggestions fly please!

So excited for you!
I used a regular backpack as a diaper bag for Hannah. It was great. The only suggestion I would make is to get one which is a brighter colour inside (mine is silver material inside) rather than black, as it makes it easier to find things.
For a baby carrier I swear by the Ergo. I have a bad back, but can carry Hannah perfectly comfortably in this and it does front, side and back carry positions. Hannah is now two, over 11kg (22 lbs) and can still go in it comfortably for the two of us. It has been brilliant for helping with attachment and giving her reassurance, as well as letting me have free hands for shopping. And it comes in male friendly colours ;)
I'd go with either a maya wrap or an Ergo carrier. And I used a diaper backpack when we went to China - loved it. It was over four years ago though, so I don't have a specific name brand suggestion.
My baby wearing sister (mother of 5) SWEARS BY the Ergo carrier.... and she's used them ALL. Including that Maya wrap, the Mei Tai, other ring slings, etc etc. The Ergo is her #1 pick. All my BTDT China mom friends who have used it say the same thing.
Go to the RQ forum and search "Ergo" and you'll see how many people have used it and recommend it for the China trip.
Here... found a post my sis wrote on it awhile back.

If the link doesn't work just go to her blog and search "baby carrier". It'll pop up.
I used an Eddie Bauer backpack from Babies R Us. I really enjoyed it! It had a pocket in the front for credit cards and keys. So, you don't have to carry a purse, if you don't like. I liked having my hands free and it was awesome for flights, too. Paul also didn't mind carrying it, since it was navy blue. I think they still carry something similar to it.
The maya wrap pulled all on one side so I had neck pain. I later purchased an Ergo and loved it. Wished I purchased it sooner. There is no fabric between you and the baby, great direct contact. It can be used in the front or as a back pack.

Definitely bring a backpack to China. I just bought a regular one and it worked like a charm. My friend Amy borrowed it when she went to China.
I used a Hip Hammock in China and loved it. I actually brought an Ergo too, but Bri did so well in the Hip Hammock that I never used it. I ended up selling the Ergo to a friend before she went to China. I have heard that people love the Ergo.
BTW, did you get the e-mails I sent you?
Bring a backpack for sure to China and I even brought an umbrella stroller to China twice, and rented one once, and then bought one for the trip home. They are great, they hold so many things in them too even when the baby isn't in them !
Oh, and I got you a gorgeous babt bag, it is pink and brown striped I am going to send you !

If you want my maya wrap, you can have it. We don't use it. Think we used it twice. Jeff prefered the backpack. I liked it though.
Okay, my number one recommendation for baby carriers is to go to thebabywearer.com, sign up for the forums, find a babywearing get together near you, and GO. Try them out. See what you like.
I am a mei tai girl, personally. I can still easily carry either kid in my Kozy Carrier. I still cook dinner at least once a week with Monster Boy in it. Hate the Ergo. HATE IT. They are butt ugly, and for the price quite frankly there are better soft structured carriers out there.
As for ring slings, the Maya is not bad, but you might want something a bit more flexible (mayo only works well on one shoulder) and supportive (the fabric is fairly loose weave, so not very supportive) for an older child. I like the shoulder on the Sleeping Baby Productions slings, email Jan there and see what she recommends from her stock fabric. A German Woven Wrap, turned into a sling, would be the most supportive, but they are seriously expensive. I know Jan can fix you up with something you will be happy with, and she is an absolute sweetheart!
Can't tell you much about a diaper bag, I have a timi & leslie right now but don't care for it, it did not hold up well. Lands End Backpack carriers are just not what they used to be. I will ask around and get back to you.
We are VERY excited for you here.
